Underground gas storage

Stored gas.
Recovered energy.

Recover stored-gas pressure energy and thermal energy supplied by the reservoir during withdrawal. Available waste heat can add further electrical output.

The opportunity

Recover pressure energy.
Harness reservoir heat.

Gas exchanges heat with the surrounding formation during storage and withdrawal. WEX²® harnesses reservoir-supplied thermal energy carried by the gas alongside a significant part of its stored pressure energy, generating electricity as the gas expands to network pressure. The turboexpander converts over 80% of the available gas expansion energy into shaft power. Available waste heat transferred to the gas before expansion increases electrical output further.

How WEX²® works
01

Pressure-energy recovery

Generate electricity from the pressure difference between stored gas and the delivery network during withdrawal.

02

Reservoir thermal-energy recovery

Use the heat transferred from the reservoir to the gas as a thermal contribution to expansion power. The gas carries this energy from the formation to the turboexpander.

03

Additional waste-heat conversion

Integrate available waste heat through upstream gas heating to increase electrical output beyond the contribution from stored pressure and reservoir heat.

Project development

Built around
your operating reality.

A project-specific assessment establishes recoverable power, process effects and the preferred integration concept.

  • Seasonal pressure and temperature

Model inventory, withdrawal rate, reservoir heat transfer and gas temperature across the operating season to establish the combined recovery potential.

  • Delivery requirements

Network pressure, outlet temperature and gas-quality requirements set the operating boundaries.

  • Annual energy and economics

Operating hours, seasonal electricity value, available heat and installation scope determine the business case.

Delivery

The right route
for the project.

Gas storage is a potential application for Energy-as-a-Service. The project company and customer agree equipment scope, tie-in arrangements, heat supply, offtake and operating responsibilities.
